Tuesday Tasting with Rise Over Run || Hidden Gem Burgundies || Saturday Winemaker Visit

TUESDAY TASTING WITH RISE OVER RUN || WINEMAKER VISIT
FEATURED BURGUNDY PRODUCER || VOLCANIC SOIL - BASED KERMIT LYNCH WINE DINNER
Hello from the Caviste:

We are thoroughly enjoying this patio weather. We have several events coming up next week and hope you can join us. We are excited to have Tracy come back and pour fun, delicious wines from Slovenia and Croatia, as well as from Portugal. Then, on Saturday, April 6, we will have a winemaker visit from Corzano e Paterno, a classic Tuscan producer.

For this week's wine feature, we present Burgundy! We were offered a small allocation of wines from the Prudhon estate.  This producer makes classic Burgundy (vibrant and elegant) in the under-the-radar region of St Aubin.

Finally, we still have a few seats available for our Kermit Lynch Wine Dinner, April 10. This dinner will focus on terroir and offer wines from grapes grown on volcanic soil. This will be a truly unique wine and dining experience. Please email us if you wish to join us.

Happy Weekend!

Arianna Gelpke from Corzano e Paterno
Anna from Piedmont Wine Imports

La Fattoria Corzano e Paterno, founded by the Swiss architect Wendel Gelpke, is now owned and operated by his heirs, the Gelpke and Goldschmidt families. The farm extends over two hundred hectares (five hundred acres) of verdant and stony hills enabling the production of our extensive range of wines, sheep cheeses and high quality olive oil. In 2005 Gelpke’s daughter, Arianna, following her studies in enology and viticulture and experience in other cellars, came back full time to the farm.

Arianna will be on-site with us on Saturday, April 6, to pour her wines and meet you. We can't wait!

She'll be pouring:

“Il Corzanello” | Bianco Toscano IGT
“Il Corzanello” Rosato Toscano IGT
“Il Corzanello” Rosso Toscano IGT
“Terre Di Corzano” Chianti DOCG
“I Tre Borri” Sangiovese Rosso Toscano IGT

- Featured Producer -

Domaine Henri Prudhon

These days, if you are on the hunt for value in Burgundy, you have to find lesser-known regions that punch way above their wine 'weight'.  Domaine Prudhon is such a gem based in St. Aubin, a region lying next to Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne Montrachet. The Prudhons have beautiful terroir (one of the broadest representations of St. Aubin’s sites), farm without herbicides or chemical fertilizers, and work unrushed and with minimal intervention in the cellar. We have the privilege to receive allocations of this special Burgundy, a range of their whites and reds, and this is the one time of the year we see these wines come into the store. Please email us if you wish to reserve some of these wines.
Aligoté
1er Cru "Frisson d'Avril"
An exemplary Aligoté from two parcels totaling a mere half hectare, one in Puligny-Montrachet (30+-year-old vines) and one in Saint-Aubin (60+ year old). The wine is raised in stainless steel, rendering a classic style, with notes of green apple, lemon verbena and crushed stone. Its direct, zingy and palpable mineral drive and an attractive fruit presence complement its bright and racy character.

$30
2021’s devastating April frost made it impractical for the Prudhons to bottle separately many of their premier crus: Les Castets, Sur le Sentier du Clou, En Remilly, La Chatenière, and Murgers des Dents de Chien. Instead, they combined the little crop they got into a single bottling camed “Cuvée Frisson d’Avril” (“April’s shivers”).  This is a successful one-off emblem of a painfully difficult year, offering impressive depth and richness and a penetrating calcareous through-line. It is a somber reminder of what farmers globally are experiencing with their crops.

(only 3 bottles available)
$62

Additional Prudhon Wines Available

White:

Bourgogne Blanc, "En Jorcul" 2020 | from a lieu-dit (single plot) that is expressed beautifully through chardonnay; mineral, harmonious, delicate fruit. $35

Red:

Premier Cru, "Cuvée Les Rouges Gorges" 2021 | a two-parcel bottling, one on the hillside above the hamlet of Gamay and the other located between Saint Aubin and Chassagne-Montrachet; wild berries, slight game, very little new oak, classic burgundian in every sense. $42

Premier Cru, "Les Frionnes" 2020 | from a one-hectare plot, 50-year old vines, intense fruit, minimal new oak, fresh and medium-bodied silkiness. $49

Premier Cru, "Sur le Sentier du Clou Veilles Vignes" | from the oldest vines on the estate, 45-80 year old, 1.5 hectare size, most serious in this line-up, red fruit, berry spice, structure, one worth laying down for awhile. $49

Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge, "Les Chambres" 2020 | from 1/3 of a hectare on the eastern side of Chassagne, 45 year old vines, strong, a bit muscular, fragrant, tannins, hint of leather. $54
