Hello from the Caviste:
We hope you are enjoying the spring sunsets - our upcoming events are just right for these beautiful evenings.
Anna from Piedmont Wine Imports is back on Tuesday, April 30, for off-the-beaten path wines -- a pet nat rosé, an Alto Piemonte nebbiolo, and more surprises!
The symphony musicians are also back on Thursday, May 2, 5-6:30, for beautiful live music and a little preview chat with Music Director Michelle Merrill.
Take note of our upcoming wine dinners and visits from winemakers, importers, and Artist Paul Bright. Scroll below for details.
And, of course, we are excited about another gem of a Burgundy producer from Côtes-de-Beaune with vineyards in Pommard, Volnay, and more.
We look forward to seeing you the shop or at the wine bar soon!

Tuesday Tasting Off-the-beaten path with Anna from Piedmont Wine Imports

Anna will pour off-the-beaten-path wines - either lesser-known grapes (aleatico or sylvaner), or regions that are not as well known as their neighbor (alto piemonte), but so worth the attention because of their value and quality.
Annesanti | Umbria IT | Raspato | Sparkling Rosato This is a pet nat of Sangiovese. Aleatico must is used for the secondary fermentation. It’s a pretty, hazy pink color. Lively, dry, easy to enjoy. A perfect lunch bottle. — Jay Murrie of PWI
Bott Frères | Alsace FR | Sylvaner Sylvaner is your next pinot grigio with a dash of chenin. Crunchy green apples, a hint of lime, minerally, electric and refreshing, as Anna would say. Thirst-quenching for this time.
Annesanti | Umbria IT | Ninfa del Nera | Bianco Blend of Grechetto, Trebbiano, Malvasia. Fermented and aged in stainless steel, with light skin contact. It’s bottled without fining or filtration during clear skies and a waning moon. — JM
Vallana | Campi Raudii | Alto Piemonte IT | Nebbiolo, Vespolina Earthy. Spicy. Red fruit. Is the name a bloody memory of the great Roman victory over invading Gauls that happened at this place in 101B.C.? Or is it a reference to wild, untrellised vines the same Romans planted in the Alto Piemonte? Either story is cool with me. 75% Nebbiolo and 25% Vespolina, hand-picked, and made entirely in large concrete tanks. — JM

Featured Burgundy Producer

Claude Maréchal makes his wines as pure and sleek as possible, with vibrant fruit and great potential to age. Claude, together with his wife, Catherine, began with 4 hectares of vines in the 1980's, today it’s 12.5 hectares – with holdings in Volnay, Pommard, Chorey-Les-Beaune, Auxey-Duresses, and Ladoix. In the vineyard, Claude has a reputation of being one of the last vignerons to pick his fruit - hence, as ripe as possible. In the winery, he practices pure natural winemaking methods, no chemicals involved. The results are noble, authentic and uncompromising wines. The Aligoté and Bourgogne rouge are ready to drink now and the other gems listed below are worth decanting or cellaring.
|
|
Aligoté As beautifully soft, crisp and intriguing as an Aligoté can be. This lush vintage has lovely acidity, a crisp edge and a refined balance – a fine expression of fruit with good complexity and concentration. Maréchal produces a benchmark example, from their southern vineyards in Bligny and Pommard. Fruit was harvested quite late in the season giving it some creaminess with a splash of lemon. Currently on our by-the-glass menu - come in for a glass.

Bourgogne Rouge 'Gravel' Grapes are made mostly from Pommard and a bit of Chassagne terroir, consisting of gravel soil, hence the name. Catherine and Claude intentionally crafted this wine made for immediate drinking pleasure for an amazing value. Light, delightful ruby color and profound seductive aromas, reminiscent of a summer day in an orchard. Ripe tree fruit carries through onto the palate with a balance of slight earthiness and fresh clean finish.
