Tuesday Tasting - Northern Exposure | Fall Vegetarian Dinner Oct 9

Wine Tasting - Northern Exposure (Alsace & Canavese)
Fall Vegetarian Dinner Oct 9
Hello from the Caviste:

Hard to believe it is October, but we have lots of fun and tasty wine events - Tuesday Tastings, Wine Classes and Dinners. Something for everyone to enjoy.

Our wine bar is always open for you as well if you want to take a pause and have a glass (with our  "snacky bits" available all day).

This Tuesday, we have a "Northern Exposure" Wine Tasting, focused on wines from northern France (Alsace) and northern Italy (Canavese), Tuesday, October 7, 5-7 drop in, with Sophie Barrett from Haw River.

Russ leads another Wine Class, A Tour of ItalyWednesday, October 8, 6pm. This is a great chance to taste some Italian classics and explore the diversity of grapes from the country.  Did you know they use over 500 different grapes in various wines? This is a rare chance to taste through reds and whites, side by side.

You also may have noticed that instead of a daily bar snacks program, we are hosting a Thursday night dinner series with Peter Bedrosian. We're pouring high-end, exquisite wines to pair with Peter's food, and we are having a blast. Come join us.

Next one is Fall Vegetarian NightThursday, Oct 9 (see menu below). Like Ottolenghi, Peter Bedrosian will do his magic with seasonal vegetables, an do not worry, you WON'T go home hungry but learn what a treat well cooked veggies are. We will include a choice of either of two classic Loire wines, a Chenin Blanc or Cab Franc, from two iconic female producers. We are so excited about this event.

Cheers

Alsace & Canavese
Tuesday, Oct 7, 5-7pm drop in

$5 tasting fee, waived with featured bottle purchase

Sophie Barrett from Haw River will be back in the store Tuesday.  We are excited about this tasting because these are the type of wines we always drink when traveling in Europe, but believe should be seen (and tasted) more here.  Classics that are more under appreciated than under-the-radar.  Come explore a little . . . .

Charles & Amelie Sparr - Alsace, France
Charles and Amelie Sparr have a young estate with a long history.  Charles is the 12th generation but founded his estate with his wife Amelie in 2017.  They make organic wines in one of our favorite regions in France -- Alsace.  Don't be distracted and confused by the tall bottles, experience and enjoy these wines, truly wonderful with so much southern cooking.

bubbly: Celebration, Cremant d'Alsace Blanc | pinot blanc
granitic soils, from three villages, Turckheim, Ingersheim, and Sigolsheim; rare to see a 100% pinot blanc bubbly $28

red:  Carpe Diem | pinot noir
from Altenbourg & Rosenbourg sites, matured in Stockinger barrels, no new oak; medium-bodied, sour cherry, light but packs a punch $25

Ferrando - Canavese, Italy
Head almost due west from Milan in the direction of Chamonix and you find the Alto Piemonte home to elegant nebiolo and whites from Erbaluce.  The Ferrando estate traces its history to 1900 and has long been an influence and leader in the small town of Ivrea. This is a unique region, technically in the Piedmont but at the edge of the mountainous Valle D'Aosta. It offers wines of finesse, complexity and longevity, something we tasters could aspire to as well.

white: Cascina Cariola | Erbaluce
from the single-vineyard “cru” site of Cascina Cariola situated in the village of Piverone, fermented in stainless steel; alpine honey, minerally, orchard fruits, herbs, perfect pairing with fall vegetables  $28

red: La Torrazza | Nebbiolo
soft tannins, touch of spice, warm earthiness, wild berries, secret-gem-of-a nebbiolo, packs way above its price point  $25
