New and Returning Favorites  - Piedmont Wine Imports

Tuesday, June 20
4:30 - 6:30pm

Free, Drop-In, Bar snacks at 5:30
We tasted each of these wines recently and found them so good we wanted to present them to the WS wine community.  Stop by to taste through them, then stay for a small bite and a glass afterwards.

De Sanctis "496" Frascati  70% Malvasia di Candia, 30% Trebbiano Toscano. Peach and pear, almond, floral. Aromatic on the nose, textured/layered on the palate. Located a (generous) stone's throw from metropolitan Rome, Luigi and Lorenzo craft elegant expressions of one of Italy's oldest known wines.
Ferlat Ribolla Gialla  2-day skin contact ("orange wine") ribolla gialla. Lemon, golden apple, dried grasses and herbal tea. Soft and surprisingly clean. A pair of young winemakers dedicated to clean farming, nuanced wine, and indigenous grapes.
Pas de l'Escalette "Ze Roze"  Grenache, Cinsault, Carignan blend. Mineral, strawberry, citrus. A certified organic farm in the steep, dramatic limestone plateaus of the Terrasses du Larzac. Drink ocean (or pool) side.
Oltretorrente  Barbera Rosso, Piedmont, Italy. Classic returning favorite with lots of black fruits, hint of spice, and floral bouquet.
AJ Adam
Rosé, Pinot Noir
Mosel

This part of the Mosel wine region held top rated vineyards in 1868 but fell into neglect as generations moved from the hard work in steep vineyards to easier life in the city.  Andreas Adam is almost single-handedly responsible for bringing the Dhroner Hofberg back to its former status as one of the great Grand Crus of the Mosel.  With his first vintage in 2000, he began accumulating the steep vineyards that no one else wanted.  Joined by his sister in 2013, the sibling winemaker team's passion for their terroir is captured in this beautiful rosé. Made from Pinot Noir (Spatburgunder) it is has raspberries, strawberries, a lot of bright fruit but with Pinot Noir's touch of playful seriousness that accents the bright fruit flavors with a slight salinity.  This may be your favorite porch wine this year.  $24
Dautel
Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) Württemberg

With grape growing history going back 500 years, the Dautel's knowledge from centuries of experience has contributed to the growing seriousness of German wines, both red and white. Württemberg, a region previously known for its bulk wine, now offers more serious wine values led by the Dautels, one of the first families to estate bottle their wines.  Ernst and his son, Christian, are dedicated to terroir-driven wines. Wines that are supremely balanced, raised in stainless steel for a balancing brightness to the richness of Pinot Blanc (aka Weissburgunder).  Delicious and easy drinking, the wine is engaging with notes of pear and sliced fresh quince, perfect for a summer afternoon sunset.
$24
Braunewell
Pinot Noir
Rheinheissen

François Breiniville fled 17th Century France's Huguenot persecution to settle in Essenheim, just southwest of Mainz. In time, the last name changed to Braunewell and while farmers this entire time, they started bottling their own wines in the 1960's.  This is a great example of fine soil (limestone) in a less expected region, Rheinhessen, providing a delicious pinot noir. An insider tip is looking for well-made Pinot Noir in lesser known regions.  A summer red that can even take a slight chill and a value at $27.
