Vajra JC Claré, Langhe, Italy - $23 /bottle
Love Nebbiolo (Barolo/Barbaresco) and want to enjoy the grape in the summer time? A wine with history dating back to the 1200s? Or want to ask yourself "Why is this wine so delicious to drink?" Here is a red wine for summer you can enjoy all the way into fall.
The Vajras, with a long history of wine production, have estate vineyards at slightly higher elevation than their neighbors so their fruit ripens a little later and have long been a source for wines of consistent quality and authenticity. With the purchase of the Baudana estate they extended their prime real estate in the Piedmont region. Always curious, Giuseppe Vajra looked to the past for this wine. He states, "Claré J.C. is a nebbiolo made according to a 1606 note by Gian Battista Croce, the jeweler of the house of Savoia. This wine is a time-capsule into an era when nebbiolo wines tasted fresher, slightly crisp and smooth. This is a wine for people who are young at heart and curious about the forgotten past of Piemonte."
The wine is full of the red fruits Nebbiolo is known for, fresh hints of fresh cut cherry, a bit of wood smoke, some crushed rose petals and a smile inducing vibrancy. The smoky note of Nebbiolo is more of a background or accent, with the depth of flavor coming from a dark plum note in the mid-palate. The wine is perfect for summer meals, house made pizzas, cheese boards and charcuterie or tomatoes, tomatoes, tomatoes.

Selbach Oster Brut, Mosel, Germany - $32/bottle
Making wine for over 400 years, you would guess correctly this winery has learned a thing or two through the years. For many, this is a German answer to Champagne. From Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, a great answer to Champagne, comparable in quality if not in price. Savory, dried pineapple, Asian plum, nutty, and refreshing citrus pith notes. This is a dry sparkling from one of the most influential quality winemakers in the Mosel. You can taste the crumbly blue slate soil that evokes that classic minerality, balanced with a wild yeastiness and nuttiness. A show-stopper German sparkling.

Migot, Côtes de Toul, Rosé, Lorraine, France - $26/bottle
Most people know French wines, few are familiar with Alsatian wines, fewer yet know the intiriguing wines of Alsace's neighbor: Lorraine, a region smaller than some California wineries. While it was in the shadows of its more famous neighbors for various reasons, serious winemakers are placing Lorraine back on the map.
Camille Migot, 13th generation of winemakers, owns a tiny parcel (5 hectares). Small, but immensely memorable and delightful. This "Vin Gris" is the calling card for the region - reflective of the soul of Lorraine's terroir. The flavors evoke a waxy, deep and mouth-coating salmon-tinged rosé that, despite its depth, sparks with acidity. Migot’s version is almost incomprehensible in its combination of texture and power, with lightness and zing. The general blend is about half Pinot Noir and half Gamay. The Pinot Noir can clock in as low as 11% alcohol; he does not chaptalize it. Kiwi, tangerines, meyer lemons mixed with tiny red berries, refreshing, balanced, perfect with lightly grilled salmon with a peach or mango chutney, or hard cheeses and crackers.
