Spring wines, events, classes

Hello from the Caviste;

This week we are focusing on a range of delicious wines coming from Burgundy, one of the most renowned regions in the world of wine.  They include a fantastic Cremant as well as a white and red that will have you planning your next get together with friends.

As well, we have some in store tastings and classes lining up to help further explore some of the portfolios we work with, regions we like or latest discoveries.

Domaine Du Pas Saint Martin

"La Vie en Rose"

A Loire rosé sparkler

A new and delicious sparkling rose from an ancient grape and old production method. La Vie en Rose is produced in the “Methode Ancestrale”. This method pre-dates the “Methode Champenoise” and employs one interrupted fermentation rather than an induced second fermentation. Centuries ago fermentation would stop naturally or at least retard, due to the cooling temperatures in the late fall and winter. The warmer temperatures of spring would reenergize and recommence the fermentation. The “Methode Ancestrale” takes advantage of this natural cycle by taking the partially fermented juice and bottling it in the spring where it finishes its fermentation.

Laurent Charrier makes this sparkling wine from Grolleau Noir that is grown in his Anjou vineyard. Grolleau Noir is a centuries old grape type native to the Loire and one that is used primarily in Rosé d’Anjou.  A delicious intermingling of mountain strawberries and crushed cherries, $24

Bitouzet Prieur
Burgundy Blanc

De-classified Meursault

If you enjoy  Chardonnay and want the fruit but not the heavy footprint of oak ,this is the wine for you.  The secret value of this wine is that it is made from declassified Meursault fruit by a classic producer in the region. Vincent Bitouzet married Annie Prieur, whose family had very good holdings in the village of Meursault. Most of their vines were planted in 1953 and the Prieur family winemaking history dates back to 1804.  Today, they offer us truly classic wines worthy of being sought out when available.

The vines for this bottling lay within the village of Meaursault, so there is a lot of value to be had in this bottling.  There is a minerality underpinning but the wine is more seductive and opulent than their more serious bottlings, ripe yellow apple, pear, grilled pineapple, fresh cream.  I love this wine with fresh seafood, crab cakes and lemony roast vegetables.  $39

Chevrot Pinot Noir

Another winemaking family with a long history, stretching back to 1830.  The Chevrot started bottling under their own label in the 1970's. This wine could probably be labeled as Maranges since the fruit comes from two vineyards there; Sur le Chêne with a gravelly soil and Sur le Bois with clay soil. It would certainly cost more if it was.

Their work in the vineyard is all organic and they never add enzymes, acidify or chaptalize and the red wines do not see any sulfur until bottling. This approach crafts a bight almost playful wine that are naturally clean and precise.  There is elegance and finesse with an abundance of red fruits, sliced cherries, crushed black raspberries and a hint of fruit wood smoke.  This too is a serious Burgundy offering great value for the price. Lovely with roast duck but also mushroom dishes and cedar planked salmon too.   $42/bottle.

Value Pack Wine Club

A great way to learn and experience a broader range of wines is through one of our wines clubs.  For a few years now, we have had two, Benchmark reds and Champagne.  Now, we are excited to announce the addition of our newest club focused on our value wine selections.

3-pack value club: Once a month, you'll receive 3 bottles per month, all incredibly valued (usually between $15-$25 retail), some that are under-the-radar, or just drinking really well. They will be whites, reds, orange, and/or rosés that will follow the changing seasons. Monthly total price will be in the $50 range, which includes the 10% off retail pricing.

If you're interested in any of these clubs, give us a call or send us an email.

We look forward to helping you find some delicious wines for your next meal or event. Hope everyone has a great weekend.
