We will rotate them through the wine menu so there is a chance to try them by the glass. But, there are plenty to stock up a few bottles for your summer entertaining. Featured Wines
Along the southern coast of France lies the small town of Cassis, with less than 8,000 inhabitants it has been inhabited since 500 or 600 BC. Today it is a popular destination in Provence for its beautiful cliff views, warm beaches and delicious seafood - and this delicious rosé. This wine comes from a handful of parcels that total seven hectares of vineyards planted in clay and limestone soils, on a gentle north-northwest-facing slope. Grenache-dominant, with small percentages of Mourvedre and Cinsault.
The wine tastes of citrus, pink grapefruit and passion fruit with the crisp acidity in perfect balance with the rich flavors. If you can resist, a year of age softens it just a bit, less assertive, more rounded, possibly more nuanced. It is perfect with the coming crop of tomatoes but especially the local fish stew bouillabaisse. $32 a bottle this year as the Euro is working against us.
Originially acquired by Philémon Gavoty in 1806, this domaine is in its eighth generation, Domaine Gavoty and led by descendant Roselyn Gavoty. Roman-era farm in the commune of Cabasse called Campdumy (“harvest fields” in old Provençal), situated along the snaking Issole River in the northwestern sector of the Côtes de Provence appellation. The domaine is a polycultural farm encompassing 110 hectares in total, and the family has worked the land without synthetic chemicals for decades, obtaining organic certification in recent years.
With 50 hectares under vine, twenty are classified as Vin de Pays du Var, as they are situated on flatter land than the slopes used for their Côtes de Provence cuvées. Built around roughly equal proportions of Grenache and Cinsault, with a small amount of Carignan and a splash of Syrah, “La Cigale” (named for the ubiquitous cicadas that populate the region). Roselyn focuses on the texture of the wine and this shows through here, separating it from many more mass produced and confected wines that trade on the "Provencal" name more than the quality of the wine. It is a delicious bottle full of bright cherries and strawberries.
