Salvard wines return, pupusas and pet-nat, and more classes

  • Posted on

We are continuing with some delicious and unique wine events and classes.  We have a great free tasting lined up tomorrow afternoon with Winebow.  As well, we are welcoming one our top value and low intervention wine producers back to the store shelves.  These wines are popular every year and we keep them on the shelves as long as we can, but that is never long enough.
Domaine Salvard
On the east side of the Middle Loire lies the region of Cheverny.  For many happy consumers, this is a secret source for value priced Sauvignon Blanc wines that rival those of their neighbors in Sancerre and Pouilly Fume.

It is here that Domaine du Salvard has been working since 1898, through five hardworking generations of the Delaille family. Today, all forty-two hectares of vineyards are farmed by the capable brother team of Emmanuel and Thierry Delaille, with help from their father Gilbert. Kermit Lynch started importing these wines in 1992, a year before Cheverny received its AOC status.  With or without the official recognition, Cheverny has always been a source for quality wines of all three hues - red, white and rosé.  They have been standards at The Caviste since we opened in 2012.  As this year, we are glad to see them return and sorry they will move through so quickly, so we encourage stocking up a little while you can, we will do our best to do so as well.  Here are three different bottlings, feel free to mix and match for 10% off by the 6 pack.

Salvard Cheverny Rouge 2020
The fifth generation is now working this estate first purchased around 1900.  While Cheverny is a new AOC, founded in 1993, this wine is classic in its finesse and style.  A nice intermingling of cherry and strawberry notes with just a hint of dark fruit in the background from the Cot.  If not the perfect summer wine it is certainly among the top candidates.  It is made from 55% Pinot Noir, 42% Gamay, 3% Cot (Malbec) and at $19 a bottle certainly worth stocking up on. We have a few cases left now and are begging for a second shipment later in the summer, but no guarantees.   Pairing Suggestions - almost anything you can imagine, almost all meats and even perfect for fish. $21

Pinot Noir
For those looking for a value priced Pinot Noir where the quality outshines the low price, I can think of no better option in the store (perhaps the wine market) than this wine.  Each year, this is a go to bottling of pinot noir for many customers and many events.  There are few bottles of pinot noir on the market that can match the quality and price balance found in this wine.  It is bright and lively fruit where blackberry and cassis notes intermingle with a layering of bing cherry and black raspberry for a supple and elegant wine.  This is not heavily laden with oak, but refreshing and easy sipping.  Another great value at $19.

Salvard Rosé
label
Rosé
As we kick into rosé season for most people, we are glad to see this  store favorite return.  It presents a combination of bright lime-stoney minerality and ripe red tree fruits, think fresh from the cooler cherries.  I find it perfect with a grilled salmon and goat cheese salad and some nice crusty bread. $21
Events
Hosting events is a great way to offer a range of wine experiences, from free distributor tastings, to more focused classes, to wine and food pairing events.  Looking for any of these, we have you covered in the coming weeks.

Pupusas and Pet Nats
Friday, April 15th
5:30 to 8 pm - RSVP
$24 per plate of 3 pupusas
Want to experience one of the most delicious and interesting wine pairings in the city this week, here you go!!  We had so much fun last time, we are doing it again - hosting another fun and tasty evening of pupusas and pet-nats.  Naturally made wines and hand made pupusas - what could be more fun?  And, if the weather holds, it should be a beautiful evening on the patio.

A pupusa is a thick griddle cake or flatbread from El Salvador and Honduras, made with cornmeal or rice flour, similar to the Venezuelan and Colombian arepa. In El Salvador, it has been declared the national dish and has a specific day to celebrate it.  Lordy these are delicious and perfect for a fall evening meal.

We are offering 3 pupusas, some coleslaw and sauces on the side for $24.  As these are handmande, we have a limited number of servings, so, an RSVP is required.  We will have our normal BTG list in addition to some specific pairings for the evening.  Email or call for reso's.
Symphony by the Glass
Thursday, April 21 from 4:30 to 6:30
We are hosting the symphony again for a little live music and paired wine selections.  This is a great opportunity to hear some music, enjoy a glass of wine on the patio and learn a little about the upcoming symphony concert at the Stevens Center.

Upcoming Classes
Italy - Southern Italy
April 26th, starting at 6pm
We have had to adjust this class a little due to shipping challenges.  This will be the 'historic' Sicily.  The kingdom was once all land south of Tuscany.  And while we love the wines of the island that most people know as the region now, shipping has prevented the distributor from having these wines available to pour.  Nevertheless, we have the following line up arranged for the event
April 26, Tuesday @ 6pm - Two Sicilies, Jay Murrie from Piedmont Wine Imports, $40, RSVP only.

Cantina Morone Albanora Falanghina del Sannio
Morela un Mese e Mezzo orange wine
Centorame Libramente Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo
Plantamura Etichetta Rossa Primitivo
Cantina Morone Piedirosso
Morella "Mondo Nuovo" Primitivo

France -The Rhone
May 3rd, starting at 6pm
The Rhone Valley is almost littered from north to south with delicious wine makers.  In this class we will explore a region best known to many American drinkers, the Southern Rhone.  Here you find value priced Cotes du Rhones to Chateauneuf du Papes.
