RIOJA & MALLORCA WINE TASTING | CENTRAL COAST CALIFORNIA | UPCOMING EVENTS
Hello from the Caviste:

Doesn't this week actually feel and look like Fall? We hope you are grabbing any opportunity to breathe the fresh air and absorb the sights of our beautiful city.

We have a growing lineup of fun events for you, and of course, constant new and returning arrivals on our shelves, including conservas and pantry items. We hope to see you here soon.

First up! Spanish Wine Tasting - Rioja and Mallorca, this Tuesday, November 19, 5-7 pm drop in, with Sophie from Haw River Wine Merchant. Two reds and two whites that are perfect for this weather.

Second, we have a California wine tasting, hosted by your Caviste crew, next Saturday, November 23, 3-5 pm. We will feature Lady of the Sunshine wines from San Luis Obispo. As you know, one of us is a Californian at heart who loves showcasing the next generation of winemakers focused on terroir. Swing by for a taste of pure sunshine.

Third, save some dates! We have two amazing artists who will come chat about the exhibits, Thursday, December 6, and then there is that Japanese-style dinner with sake pairings, hosted by Chris from World Sake Imports, Wednesday, December 11. Please come join us if you can!

- Spanish Wine Tasting -
Rioja & Mallorca
with Sophie from Haw River
Tuesday, Nov 19, 5-7pm drop in
$5 tasting waived with feature bottle purchase
We are excited to welcome Sophie back with familiar Spanish classics and a twist or two. It is rare to see a white Rioja on the shelf, or wines from Mallorca. All of these are great for your next dinner party, and are versatile enough to pair with appetizers, seafood, or a holiday roast. Sophie will focus on two producers:

Luberri - Rioja
Luberri is in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, with 35-year old tempranillo vines along with white viura and malvasia. The winery started in 1991 by Florentino Martínez Monje and his wife, Maria José. He is one of the most influential and respected winemakers in the region, you would name-drop him in that world. He is known for his semi-carbonic, whole-cluster maceration of tempranillo (think Spanish version of beaujolais!) and advocates true terroir and gastronomy of the Basque region.

Luberri, Zuri ("white" in Basque) Rioja Bianco | 80% Viura, 20% Malvasia
crisp, substantial medium-bodied warmth, fantastic fall white
$20

Luberri, Florus, Red | 95% Tempranillo, 5% Moscatel de Alejandría
biodynamic, clay amphora
"beaujolais-ish" refreshing red (hint, another turkey wine)
$31

Mesquida Mora - Mallorca
Female winemaker Bàrbara Mesquida Mora pioneered biodynamic and regenerative agriculture in the vineyards on the island. Her vineyards grow on calcareous clay, limestone, and cal vermell (red clay rich in iron). She showcases native varietals such as prensal, callet, mantonegro, giró blanc, and gorgollassa. She planted over 100 fruit trees to encourage biodiversity. We like her alot - she is thinking about the future of Mallorca, and inspiring what the rest of us can do.

Sincronia Blanc | Gíro blanc, Chardonnay, Prensal, Parellada
calling card of classic Mallorcan white, apple, pear, mineral, tropical fruit
$24

Sincronia Negre | Callet, Merlot, Gorgollassa, Syrah, Mantonegro, Monastrell, Pinot
fragrant, cherry, red plums, currants, slight oak notes
$24

Join us for the tasting, stay for a glass, enjoy some bar bites at 5:30

Lady of the Sunshine - Central Coast
with the Caviste Crew!
Saturday, Nov 23, 3-5 pm drop in
$5 tasting waived with feature bottle purchase
California at the Caviste? Yes, it's true. We are bringing a little sunshine into the shop, and opening some delicious, juicy, fun wines from the Central Coast. We are always about quality producers, terroir-focused, low-intervention wines, regardless of where they are from.

Lady of the Sunshine is Gina Giugni, who is part of the husband-wife team of Scar of the Sea wines you may have seen on our shelves (we are pouring a Scar of the Sea gamay at the bar this weekend). Her focus is on regenerative agriculture, farming in the Edna appellation on the central coast. Each of these wines are stars, and we are excited for an opportunity to open and pour samples for you. Host gift? Friends-giving turkey? Christmas present? All of these would fit right in.

Chevey | Presqu'ile Vineyard, Santa Maria Valley | Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay
$35

Goldie | Stolo Vineyard, SLO coast | Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay
$35

Pinot Noir | Edna Valley

A Season for That, by Steve Hoffman

- a little escape for perhaps a greater discovery -

As the weather begins to slide into the cooler weather of winter, I (Russ) found a delightful book about time spent in the south of France.  Interestingly, the small town of Autignac where the Hoffman family lives is but 45 minutes along country roads from Lodeve where we have friends.  But, this book is not the typical "expat living in France" book. Rather, it is a deeper revelation and celebration of life.

In Autignac, Steve Hoffman, a "perfectly comfortable middle-aged Minnesotan man who has always been desperately, pretentiously in love with France" comes to understand life as a circle of changing seasons, not just an ever upward trend of "more." His anecdotes reveal the joy and even fulfillment in the daily tasks alongside neighbor, family and friend.  Having taken 8 years to write the book, the prose is as well turned as a fine cut diamond.  Pages reveal moments of insight, humor and poignant reflection.  This is not so much a travelogue or wine book, although both are covered, but an exploration of the "terroir" that is life with others and family and learning to treasure them and ourselves in all of the "soil" that is life.  I've found it an engaging and at the same time motivational book to read, reminding me frequently of friends who live 45 minutes from this small town of Autignac.  Certainly a book worth enjoying with a fine glass of Languedoc wine (or Burgundy, you'll have to read to find the connection.)
