Hello from the Caviste:

Welcome to November. A time to connect or re-connect with friends and family, pull out the nicer wines, hopefully start a fire sometime if it ever cools down. If you have been in our shop recently, you will notice that we are stocking up on holiday wines, especially our magnums and champagnes. We also have special bottlings making rare appearances - scroll below for our feature wine. It is never too early to start prepping, and of course, taste test these wines for the upcoming holidays.

This Tuesday, November 5, 5 to 7 drop in, we are tasting mostly Portuguese wines (with one Spanish coastal bubbly) with Tracy from Rise Over Run. It is a great line up that covers the first hour of the party (the bubbles), the appetizers (the white), and the second hour of the party, one red for a larger crowd, and one red for a smaller group.

Stay tuned for more events as we keep filling up the calendar.

CHABLIS

Château de Béru

Chablis is one of the most recognized wine regions in the world and Château de Béru has been there for over 400 years. As one would expect, all 400 years were not smooth sailing.  Phylloxera decimated their vineyards, vines weren’t replanted for almost 100 years, then the fruit was mainly sold to co-ops until 2004 when Athénaîs returned and took the helm of her family estate upon her father’s untimely passing.

Now a mother-daughter team with the daughter, Athénaîs, leading the way. She has re-established the estate converting to biodynamics in the vineyard and low intervention work in the cellar.  This and other work has made the state one of the most talked about in the region.  The wines are crafted to showcase the mineral and iodized notes of Chablis.  These are wonderful wines of a delicate richness perfect for a family gathering during the holidays.

'Terroirs de Beru' is village level Chablis, meaning the vines are sourced from different parcels to showcase both Chablis and Beru as a whole. The wine showcases elegance of the fruit and mineralogy of the Kimmeridgian soil found beneath the vines. There is a density and heft to this wine, it will certainly age or drink wonderfully after a couple of hours.  $48

The Montserre is a single vineyard bottling. The plot owes its name to the “Serres”, a geological formation in the form of dense superimposed limestone plates. It is the highest point on the hill above Béru. On the surface, the ground is strewn with white pebbles. There is wind exposure on all four directions, and is bordered by a hedge of trees that provides a biodiverse ecosystem to nurture the vines. This is a classic Chablis, premier-cru level, with full density and weight, truly balanced. You can put this in your cellar for many years, or open now and explore the multi-level of flavors sip after sip. $70

The two bottles together provide a nice comparative study in Chablis.
