Possibly, THE wine of America! Unique Madeiras that reflect style and complexity of great vintage wines
A great gift for anyone who loves history or Port (especially Tawny) or enjoys a delicious fireside glass to end an evening.
In the 18th century, a young America pre-dated refrigeration. This made wine shipping a challenge but resulted in the famed and highly sought after wine Madeira which became United States’ most coveted wine. Present at almost every important public event—from the signing of the Declaration of Independence to George Washington’s Inauguration— a glass of Madeira was raised. For more than 150 years, no other wine rivaled it in the eyes of American connoisseurs. But in time, the victim of a series of natural, political and economic calamities, Madeira Wine drifted into obscurity.
It was not until the dawn of the 21st century that America once again embraced this enigmatic wine, helped in no small part by The Rare Wine Co.’s creation of its Historic Series. This series offers bottles from single grapes representing different colonial seaports of the young country. The further south you go, the brighter more energetic the wine, to the north richer and fuller - but all are delicious.
